October 29 Republic Day Speech

Dear teachers, dear students, and distinguished guests,

Today is October 29.

This date on our calendar does more than remind us of an important day in our history. It also invites us to consider an important question:
What does the Republic mean to the Turkish nation?

The Republic was proclaimed on October 29, 1923. But if we think of it only in the context of that day and the circumstances of that time, we miss much of what it truly represents. The Republic is not only a precious legacy passed down to us from the past; it is also a great responsibility we carry toward the future.

The Republic lives in a child who can express an opinion without fear, in a young person who can dream about the future, and in a teacher who opens new horizons for a student.

The Republic reminds us that regardless of where we were born, our families’ circumstances, or the differences among us, we are all equal and valued citizens of this country.

This is also one of the most important legacies left to us by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and those who worked alongside him to establish our Republic: rather than waiting for others to shape our future for us, we must build it ourselves through reason, science, education, and hard work.

Perhaps this is exactly what we can do for the Republic today:

Think more.
Listen to one another more carefully.
Try to understand our differences rather than fear them.
Refuse to remain silent in the face of injustice.
And whatever our work may be, large or small, do it as well as we can.

Because the future of a country is not built only through great decisions. It is also built through a question asked in a classroom, a book that is read, an act of kindness, something new that is learned, and a dream that we refuse to give up.

As we gather here today to celebrate another year of our Republic, we look back on our history with respect while turning our eyes toward the future.

I remember with respect and gratitude Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and all those whose efforts and sacrifices contributed to the founding of our Republic.

Happy Republic Day.

May the Republic continue to live in the ideas, the work, and the hopes of those who carry it into the future.

And as we carry our Republic forward, may these words of Atatürk—addressed not only to our nation but to all humanity—continue to guide us:

“Peace at home, peace in the world.”

For the future of the Republic will rise in the hands of generations who value reason and science, believe in peace, respect one another, and look toward the world with a commitment to peaceful coexistence.
